There is something special about lacing up a brand new pair of sneakers. Whether they are bright white or have other vivid colors, they look and feel shiny and new. Even the smell of new shoes is something to get excited about! Whenever we get new shoes, we are excited to show our friends and family because we are proud of our shoes and know that they look good on our feet. You may not realize it at first but new shoes go a long way in raising our self esteem and making us feel good about who we are and the way we look. Experts in body language say that the condition of one's shoes communicates how you feel about yourself and how you want others to treat you. So many children have never been able to experience what it feels like to put on a brand new pair of shoes. Stepp'n Up's goal is to provide this experience of standing proud in their own shoes.

shoepowerThankYouSome kids never get to lace up a new pair of sneakers simply because they have none. We constantly hear stories of children who do not go to school because they have no shoes to wear or kids who wear poorly fitting hand me downs. In Jackson, Mississippi, lives Eddie Spencer, author of Inmate 46857. On the back cover of his book, Mr. Spencer writes:

As memories flooded back, Inmate 46857 felt the pain and poverty of his childhood. He pictured himself in the morning, his only pair of shoes had fallen apart and his mother sent him to school wearing his sister's shoes. As Eddie stepped into his first grade classroom, his classmates taunted him, "Look at Eddie Spencer. He has little girl's shoes on!" Humiliation and revenge ripped his young mind, launching him on a journey of crime and violence in the streets of the Mississippi Delta.

This is only one story of how much shoes mean to kids and of how shoes can effect a child's world.

Joel McKim, in The Scoop on Sneakers: A Material Study of Running Shoes, stated:

It has often been said that you can tell a great deal about a person by the shoes they wear. It's true that few material items play as prominent a role in our every day lives as the shoes we wear on our feet. Most people spend nearly every waking hour with shoes on their feet and no item matches the combined criteria of function and fashion placed on shoes. While shoes are becoming increasingly specialized, most people have one pair of shoes they wear far more than any other and for a growing number of people (especially young people) that pair of shoes will be sneakers.
